Help Me Troubleshoot Windows Drive Sharing Issues

I'm feeling overwhelmed trying to set up drive sharing between two Windows 11 Pro machines, both using local accounts. One machine is set up as a NAS, while the other is my gaming and local LLM setup. I've made sure to configure everything correctly and even spent hours troubleshooting with ChatGPT, but I keep hitting a wall. Whenever I try to access the NAS from my gaming PC, I get prompted for network credentials, which it insists are incorrect. However, those same credentials work perfectly on my MacBook to access the NAS. I've shared the full conversation with ChatGPT for context, and I'm at a loss. Are there any alternative software solutions that could help with this issue?

Have you thought about using a dedicated NAS OS like TrueNAS? It could give you more stability and features compared to Windows for file sharing, especially since you mentioned wanting to do more than just NAS functions. Might be a steep learning curve, but could be worth it in the long run!

I’ve never really worked with Linux at all, just SteamOS. But honestly, at this point, I’m considering anything to get my drives sharing right!

It sounds like you've done quite a bit of troubleshooting already! Here are a few things you can double-check: Make sure both PCs are on the same network and that password-protected sharing is enabled on the NAS. Try connecting with the format ComputerNameUsername for your credentials, and ensure both accounts have passwords set. Also, ensure that your local account's permissions are set correctly for sharing.

Also, if you’re still having issues, it might be worth checking your SMB settings. Sometimes certain versions can cause issues when sharing, especially on Windows 11.

I hear you on the frustration with ChatGPT! If you have any smart devices on the network that could potentially access your shares, be cautious. You might want to manually adjust permissions to restrict access. And if things get too complicated, consider using a guest access setup temporarily while troubleshooting.

I have a Google Nest and a few other smart devices. I’m not too worried, but yeah, it does make me a bit uneasy. What would you recommend doing to secure my main devices while I sort this out?
