I recently upgraded my PC to improve performance for games like Star Citizen and Kerbal Space Program, and I'm now using a Ryzen 7 5800X with an RTX 3060, 64GB of RAM, and a 2TB SSD. However, after the upgrade, I've encountered a frustrating issue: my FPS drops to around 1-5 for about 10 seconds, then jumps back to over 100, only to crash again shortly after. This happens repeatedly, even in the game menus. It didn't happen with my old Ryzen 5 3600 setup. I've tried disabling the XMP options, updating my BIOS, and even reinstalling Windows. I'm concerned it could be thermal throttling due to improper thermal paste application when I upgraded the CPU, but I cleaned it well. Any ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked if the Resizable BAR option is enabled in your BIOS? That can affect performance significantly, especially with newer CPUs. It's worth a look!
First, what cooler are you using with the Ryzen 7? If you kept the same one from the Ryzen 5, it might not be sufficient for the new CPU, leading to thermal throttling. You should check your temperatures and ensure everything is properly mounted. It sounds like your cooling might be overwhelmed and needs a reassessment.
I'm using a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO V2. I'll definitely check the thermal situation!
A few things to do: make sure to install the latest AMD chipset drivers, pull out the CMOS battery to reset any old settings, and ensure that your Infinity Fabric is synced with your RAM speed (like 1800 for 3600MHz RAM). Also, check that your power plan is set to high performance. By the way, I’ve heard Biostar motherboards can be unreliable, especially with high-performance CPUs. If the problem persists, you might want to consider a different motherboard.
Good suggestion! I'll check and see if it's enabled.
