Help! My GPU Works in Slot 3 but Not in Slot 1 – Error 43 Issue

Hey everyone,

I recently upgraded to a new motherboard and CPU, switching from Intel to AMD, and did a fresh install of Windows. After setting everything up and installing the latest drivers, I'm getting an Error 43, which indicates that my graphics card isn't recognized. Since boot, it's been running off the integrated AMD graphics.

I've attempted a few fixes like reinstalling the drivers, disabling and re-enabling the device, and even reseating the GPU, but nothing seems to work. I have an MSI B850 Tomahawk motherboard with an AMD 9800x3d CPU. For GPUs, I'm testing an RTX 5090 (which I have an adapter for power) and a borrowed RTX 3080. Both cards throw the Error 43 when they're in PCIe Slot 1, but the 3080 functions perfectly when I put it in PCIe Slot 3, even though it may not perform as well due to it being a x1 lane. Strangely, I even replaced the motherboard with a new one of the same model, but the issue still persists. I'm starting to wonder if I need to swap out the CPU or other components, but that feels like a last resort. Any thoughts on why PCIe Slot 1 isn't working? Thanks for any help!

First off, check your BIOS version. Make sure it’s at least 7E62v2A20 or newer. This could be crucial for compatibility with your new setup!

Yes, I'm on version 7E62v2A46 from August 8th. So it should be up to date!

You might want to consider swapping the CPU next. The top PCIe slot is directly linked to the CPU, while the lower ones connect through the B850 hub. If there's an issue with the CPU, it could affect the functionality of that top slot.
