Help! My Housemate’s Laptop Is Using Too Much Data

I'm dealing with some serious home Wi-Fi issues in my shared house. We have a Google mesh Wi-Fi system connected to a standard-tier cable internet plan, and with five of us using various devices, it's been slow and unreliable. Recently, I discovered that my housemate's laptop is downloading a whopping 100GB a day and uploading 50GB, even though he's only home for a few hours each night. For context, my data usage is only about 0.6GB and my wife's is 6GB as she works from home with video calls. Here are my main concerns: 1) Do internet providers throttle bandwidth after exceeding certain limits? 2) What could be causing such high data usage? I don't have access to his laptop to check, so I'm really stumped. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Your housemate might be torrenting, which could explain those huge uploads. If that's the case, you should definitely set a bandwidth limit for his laptop. That way, he won't hog all the speed, especially if your wife is on important video calls during the day. You could also check your router settings to see if you can prioritize your devices over his.

Or he could just be running a massive online backup or streaming in the background. Either way, it's a good idea to talk to him and figure out what's going on.

100GB a day? That’s pretty insane! I’d have a serious chat with him. If he is torrenting, remind him it can bring unwanted attention from the ISP, and you’ll all pay the price for it. Maybe suggest he stick to off-peak hours for heavy downloads?

That’s a smart point! Maybe he just doesn’t realize how much bandwidth he's sucking up. A friendly reminder could go a long way.

Yeah, it sounds like your roommate is up to something shady, probably torrenting large files, which really sucks for everyone else on the network. If your router has QoS (Quality of Service) capabilities, use that to limit his bandwidth while keeping enough speed for your work needs. Or just confront him about it and ask him to cut back a bit.

True. You may also want to consider upgrading your router if this is a frequent issue; there are some great budget options with better QoS features these days.

It’s definitely worth talking to your housemate. You could also check your internet service details; some providers do throttle speeds or have data caps, and it might explain why things are sluggish. But based on what you've said, it sounds mainly like a data usage issue from that laptop!

For real! If he’s torrenting or doing something huge, he should at least be transparent about it, especially since it affects everyone.

It sounds like your housemate doesn’t understand how much data he's pulling. Whether it's large game updates, cloud backups, or torrents, it's surely impacting your internet. I'd suggest checking into options for setting a limit on how much bandwidth he can use. Plus, some routers allow for device prioritization which can help manage the load better.

Absolutely! It's probably worth looking into getting a router that lets you manage bandwidth better for each device on the network.
