Help! My Laptop’s Audio Stopped Working After I Uninstalled the Driver

I've run into a frustrating problem with my laptop's audio. Although I generally know my way around computers, I think I accidentally uninstalled the audio completely. My laptop, which is a Dell Latitude 5285 running Windows 10, works great when plugged into my TV, but there's zero sound coming from its own speakers.

I've had a couple of friends who are tech-savvy take a look at it, but they haven't been able to solve it either. It's been months of searching for solutions, and I've tried about a dozen fixes without success. Recently, I reinstalled the RealTek audio driver from Dell, and though it shows the audio level at 100%, I'm still not getting any sound.

I've tried other standard troubleshooting steps like checking the Device Manager for updates, but everything seems up to date. Since this is a cheap laptop, I might just buy a new one for travel, but I'd prefer to avoid that if possible. Any help would be super appreciated!

If you're up for it, a straightforward approach is to boot from a recovery image. If sound works, then it’s definitely a software issue. If not, it could be a hardware problem with the speakers. I had a similar issue due to physical damage, but opening it up felt like too much work!

I just installed the newest audio driver from Dell, but if that doesn't fix it, I don’t know how much I want to spend on testing when I could just get a new, cheap laptop.

I'm leaning toward a hardware issue, especially if the built-in speakers don’t work. Have you tested audio via USB speakers or a headphone jack? If those work, it might point to the speakers being disconnected or damaged.

Try running 'mmsys.cpl' to check if the audio device is disabled. Make sure it's enabled in Device Manager too. Sometimes the settings can be a bit tricky!

I actually checked that early on. I discovered all my audio drivers were gone! It’s been a journey since then, and even reinstalling the RealTek driver hasn’t helped.

Have you tried using headphones? If they don’t work either, I recommend installing a clean Windows on a different SSD. If it works, it’s a software issue. If it fails, then it’s likely hardware trouble like unplugged speakers or something else internal.

I've tested it all, and only the internal laptop speakers are not working. I don't think it’s a hardware failure as it all started immediately after the driver was uninstalled. I'm in a bind since I’m traveling and need some entertainment!
