I recently plugged in my PC after having it shut down for four years, but now I can't access it because the password I have written down isn't working. To make things weirder, the lock screen displays an email address: "[email protected]". When I try to reset the password, it prompts me to send a code to that email, which I don't recognize at all. I'm worried about potential malware or hacking, especially since I've used this computer to download torrents in the past. I'm hesitant to connect to WiFi and send a code to that unknown email. Last time I used the PC, everything was fine. What could be happening here?

Factory resetting it using the advanced startup options is another way to go. Just keep in mind that this will erase all your data, so back up anything you want to keep first!
It's possible you might have set it up with a fake email to bypass the online-account requirement when you first set it up. You could have forgotten about it over the years. Just wipe it and start over if you can’t remember any other account details.
You definitely don't want to send a code to any email that isn't yours. At this point, I'd recommend just reinstalling Windows using a USB installer. It’s the safest option to clear everything out and start fresh.
This sounds like a strange situation! I'd just wipe it clean and start fresh. Good luck!
It’s unlikely anything could have infected it while it was in storage. Either something was wrong before it was stored, or you might have done something without recalling it. But honestly, a fresh install is probably the best way to go. You might not even need a license key if the system has the key in the TPM chip.

I don't think I ever used a fake email. I remember customizing my Outlook account picture for the lock screen. It's all strange, but I guess a wipe might be my best option.
