Help! My PC Stopped Playing Sound, What Can I Do?

Hey everyone! I'm reaching out because I'm really struggling with my HP Compaq 6300 Pro. One day, it just stopped producing sound out of nowhere. I've tried a ton of fixes like rolling back the latest Windows update, messing with command prompt commands, restarting the audio service, and even updating and changing the drivers, but nothing seems to work. I'm not very tech-savvy and financially, I can't afford a new PC, so I'm hoping to keep all my files intact. The only thing I haven't tried yet is a clean install, but I really don't want to have to reinstall all my programs. Any advice would be super appreciated!

First off, make sure you're checking the Audio device settings. Right-click the Windows start button and open Device Manager. Scroll down to 'Sound, video and game controllers.' Do you see 'Realtek HD Audio' or something similar? If it's missing or has issues, try downloading the drivers from HP's site. If the Realtek device looks fine, ensure it's set as the default output in the Sound Settings.

Yeah, but I'm wondering if it's even compatible with Windows 10. I tried looking and couldn't find any drivers for it.

Silly question, but did you test the speakers themselves? Sometimes the internal speakers fail. Did you try using headphones to see if that makes a difference?

I actually got external speakers since the built-in ones were terrible. I tried both the front and back jacks, but still no luck.

You might also want to check for hardware issues. I had a similar problem when we had a power spike at home; my audio driver disappeared. I just re-downloaded it and restarted the PC, and it worked again. It’s worth a shot!

If nothing else works, you might want to consider installing an internal sound card or just using a USB sound card as an alternative. They can be pretty cheap and easy to set up!

That sounds like a plan! I've already ordered a USB sound card. It should arrive tomorrow.
