Hey everyone, I've been dealing with some frustrating syncing issues with OneDrive for a while now, and I'm hoping to get some advice or insights from this community. We have an organization-wide SharePoint library that our users either sync or link through OneDrive shortcuts for easy access via File Explorer. Most of our users are accustomed to using the desktop versions of M365 applications. Lately, some of our longer-tenured staff members are experiencing ongoing sync problems where the OneDrive desktop app gets stuck on 'Processing Changes' and files show a never-ending 'downloading' message when they attempt to open them.
We've had numerous Teams calls with Microsoft Support, but the suggestions haven't resolved the issues satisfactorily. The only workaround that's been consistently effective is removing the affected user from our domain controller and reprovisioning their account, but that leads to a lot of downtime, which isn't ideal.
Just to give you some context, our SharePoint environment has about 12TB of storage and migrated from an internal file server a few years ago. Initially, sync issues would occasionally pop up but could typically be fixed by unlinking and relinking the account. Now, though, it seems like we're stuck unless we do a full account reprovision.
I'm wondering if our large SharePoint environment is an issue or if we're not using OneDrive correctly. I'd really appreciate any advice or shared experiences that could help clarify the right approach here!

It sounds like you’re hitting the limits of what OneDrive can handle with an org-wide SharePoint library like that. SharePoint isn’t meant to replace a traditional file server, and syncing an entire library isn’t the recommended use case. You might want to consider breaking the data into smaller segments, only syncing what users absolutely need instead of everything at once. That should help alleviate some of the syncing headaches!
It sounds like this issue could be related to having everything in one massive library. How nested is your folder structure? If it’s too complex or deep, OneDrive will struggle with syncing. Think about restructuring for better performance!
Have you thought about how your SharePoint is structured? If all your files are crammed into one library, that’s a common culprit for these kinds of problems. Look into creating more specific libraries based on roles or tasks. Manage your structure well, and you could see some improvements!
Right! A simplified, segmented structure not only helps with syncing but can also make navigation easier for users. It's all about optimizing!
It might be worth checking the file count in your SharePoint library. If it’s high, that could definitely contribute to the syncing problems. Larger libraries or a single site with a lot of data can cause all sorts of lag. Maybe consider splitting things up to more manageable pieces?
Good point! Additionally, if you have any strange characters in site names or setup, that could also lead to issues. Sometimes those oddities stall the sync process.
I agree, your SharePoint setup seems like it’s due for a makeover. A well-organized SharePoint environment can handle large files better—consider breaking things up for improved efficiency! 12TB isn’t excessive if arranged properly.

Exactly! The sync is more about giving temporary offline access to specific files rather than constant syncing of a huge library. You might find it’ll work much more smoothly if you streamline and clarify what gets synced.
