Help! Windows 11 won’t update from 23H2 to 24H2 or 25H2

I'm running Windows 11 23H2 on my Ryzen 9 5900X with an Asus Prime B550-PLUS AC/HES and Samsung NVMe drives. A while back, I tried to auto-update to 24H2, but I rolled back after facing audio and graphics issues. Now that 23H2 is reaching end-of-life next month, I'm worried because 24H2 isn't showing up for an update. I suspect that the rollback created a local group policy or registry issue that's preventing the update from appearing. When I try to install 24H2, it goes to 85%, reboots, and then rolls back with an error code 0x8007001F. I've done some troubleshooting like running sfc and dism commands and deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder, but no luck. I even tried the Windows installation assistant for 25H2, which also failed with error 0x80246019. Now it just shows that 25H2 completed, but it hasn't actually installed. I'm starting to wonder if something on my system, maybe Malwarebytes, is interfering.

At this point, I would recommend backing up your important files to an external drive and doing a clean install of the latest version of Windows using a USB drive. Make sure your motherboard's BIOS is up to date before you start.

I updated the BIOS a couple of weeks ago for a different issue. I want to try a bit more troubleshooting before resorting to a clean install.

Have you tried performing an upgrade install using a USB? Sometimes that method works better than the update process directly from Windows.

I haven’t yet, but I assumed if the install assistant didn't work, this probably wouldn’t either.

You can use the SetupDiag tool to analyze logs and find out where the installation is going wrong. You can get it from Microsoft's site and it does a pretty good job of pinpointing errors.

I tried that, but it didn't work at first. It only kept explaining how to use it in command prompt. But then I figured out I needed to put the exe in a specific folder. Now it's processing, so fingers crossed!

Let me know what the output says; it might give a clearer idea of the failure. Good luck!

Most of the time, these installation issues are caused by incompatible drivers or hardware. A clean reinstall usually kicks the problems to the curb. But if you want to dig deeper, check the log files for clues on what's failing during the install.

Yeah, it sounds like clean install time. It can be a messy process, but sometimes it’s the only way to get everything running smoothly again.
