I'm having a really annoying problem with video playback on my laptop. When I try watching videos on any platform—be it YouTube, Netflix, or another streaming site—I notice a kind of micro-stutter. It's not a buffering issue, since I have a fast 1000Mbps fiber connection; instead, it feels like frame drops or inconsistent pacing as if the video quality is struggling.
Here are the specs of my laptop:
- **Laptop Model**: ASUS ROG Strix G16
- **GPU**: RTX 4080 Laptop GPU
- **CPU**: Intel i7
- **Operating System**: Windows 11.
The main problem is that videos just don't play smoothly; they feel jittery, which is very distracting. This issue happens regardless of the performance mode I select (Silent, Performance, Turbo, or Ultimate) and is present whether I'm on battery or plugged in.
I've also tried switching between GPU modes, using either dGPU, iGPU, or Hybrid, but I still experience the same stuttering. Interestingly, I never had these problems with my Mac or my old desktop; everything was perfectly fluid on those devices.
Recently, I've noticed that the video seems to 'hitch' for a split second every few seconds, which is subtle but very frustrating, especially if you're used to smooth playback. It feels like there's a sync issue between the browser and the GPU.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this? Could this be an issue with Windows Multi-Plane Overlay, some driver conflict, or something related to ASUS's power management settings? I would really appreciate any help!

Have you tried disabling Multi-Plane Overlay in the settings? That could also affect playback quality. If the issue occurs across all browsers, it sounds like the problem lies within how your system interacts with these applications. You might also want to test any video file formats in VLC to see how they play there; that could help identify if the issue is browser-related or not.
This sounds like it could be related to driver issues. First off, make sure that your GPU and integrated graphics drivers are up to date. You might also want to try using different browsers to see if the problem persists across all of them. Sometimes, certain browsers can handle video playback differently depending on your setup.
I suggest checking your Nvidia Control Panel. Try disabling G-Sync under the display settings and also turn off the Variable refresh rate in Windows graphics settings. Additionally, set your display to 60Hz temporarily. It’s worth testing YouTube in fullscreen after that to see if it helps.
I did set the resolution down to 60Hz and disabled G-Sync, but the problem still persists for me. What else can I try?
You should keep an eye on your CPU and GPU usage through Task Manager. Sometimes the system still uses resources that could cause playback issues. If it shows low usage while you're just running Chrome, then that’s a good sign. Another thing to try would be reinstalling your GPU driver, just to see if it resolves anything.
Yeah, I formatted my PC today and I’m only running Chrome now. The usage looks fine, but the error remains.

I’ve been updating my drivers regularly, but the issues stick around. It’s strange!
