How Can I Build My AWS Skills at Home Without Breaking the Bank?

Asked By TechieTinker42 On

I'm looking to expand my AWS skills outside of work and I want to set up my own personal AWS account at home for some training. However, I'm concerned about the costs since I'll be paying for it myself. I'm hoping to get some advice on how to keep expenses low while I explore and learn. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Definitely make use of the free AWS offerings, and always choose the cheapest region for your services! It's also important to set up cost protection by creating billing alerts and budgets. Consider using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) since it lets you create, manage, and delete your resources easily, which helps avoid leaving services running. If you're just learning, using spot instances can save you a lot of money too.

When you start a new AWS account, you get a lot of free services for the first 12 months, like 750 hours of a t2.micro or t3.micro EC2 instance, 5GB of S3 storage, and a small RDS instance. Services like Lambda also offer a million free requests each month, which is great for personal projects!

To stay on budget, set up AWS Budgets in the billing console. You can create a budget of $5 or $10, and get alerts when you hit certain spending thresholds. And remember to shut down or delete anything you aren't actively using!
