How Can I Check If My PC Fans Are Running at the Right Speed?

Hey everyone!

I recently built a new PC with a 5070Ti and noticed my GPU's idle temps were around 48 degrees Celsius, which felt a bit high. After running a 3D Mark TimeSpy benchmark, I saw my GPU peak at 71 degrees, so I'm okay with that—especially since I undervolted it after the build.

However, my Ryzen 5 7600 reached 86 degrees during the benchmark, which got me worried, considering I'm using a stock cooler. While I don't plan to overclock at all, and mostly just game, I feel like the stock cooler might be holding me back, especially with my CPU hitting those temperatures.

I suspect my fans could be part of the problem. The front fans seem a bit slow to me, and I want to check the speed of my CPU cooler fan as well. I have no clue how to check fan speeds or what I should compare them against.

Can anyone guide me on how to check if my fans are running fast enough? What software should I use, and where can I find good reference speeds? Also, keep in mind I'm currently dealing with a pretty warm room temperature right now. Thanks a lot for your advice!

An 86-degree CPU temp is fine in theory, as it can boost up to 95 degrees. But, you want to avoid that if you're gaming. Getting a better cooler would help a lot. I switched to a quality tower cooler, and my CPU runs much cooler now. Something like an Arctic Freezer is a solid choice. As for adjusting boost temp thresholds, you might want to check out PBO settings on YouTube to optimize performance and thermals without risking damage to your CPU.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll look into PBO settings when I get a new cooler. It sounds like a good approach. Also, I plan to upgrade my display soon, so I’m hoping that may help alleviate some of the CPU load.

For sure! Jumping to 1440p should definitely help balance out the performance.

Honestly, those temperatures you're seeing aren't too concerning. But if you want your fans to kick it into higher gear even when idle, definitely pop on that FanControl app. It's pretty user-friendly, so you should be fine. Just remember that good airflow is key, especially with the high room temp you mentioned.

I appreciate that! I’m planning to upgrade to a decent cooler within a couple of months. I mostly want something that’ll help manage these temps better, especially with the warm air in my room.

To check your fan speeds, I recommend downloading a program like FanControl. It's fairly easy to use, and you can find tutorials on YouTube about setting it up and adjusting your fan curves. This should help you manage your fans effectively! Just search for 'how to use fan control' to get started. Also, with the current room temperature being a factor, it's good to monitor how that affects your PC’s cooling.

Thanks! I’ll definitely check it out!
