I'm really frustrated with Apple and their services. My wife has an iPhone and over 100,000 photos stored in her iCloud. We recently decided to stop paying for iCloud+ and move those photos to an external drive instead, keeping only the important ones in the cloud. I only have a Windows laptop, and when I installed iCloud for Windows to sync the photos, it turns out I can't change the sync destination—it has to go to the C drive, where I barely have enough space. It's been stuck on 'updating...' for a day now. I also tried downloading all her files from privacy.apple.com, but the exports fail and are too large. Manually downloading 1,000 photos at a time isn't feasible either. What am I missing? Any suggestions for getting these photos off iCloud efficiently?

Check out this app called Backigo. I've had good luck with it on other devices, and it promises to help with similar issues. If you're subscribed to Amazon Prime, they also offer unlimited photo storage, which could be useful if you decide to keep any of those photos in the cloud.
Honestly, if you can find a way to build your own NAS, you could bypass iCloud altogether. But that doesn't solve the export issue right away. Maybe look into some third-party apps designed for photo transfers; they can sometimes simplify things without needing to go through Apple's tricky system.
You might want to try that privacy.apple.com export option again, but make sure you're on a stable internet connection, like Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. Sometimes those larger files can struggle to download with weaker connections. Good luck!
