How can I create an automated flowchart for my PBX phone system?

I have an on-prem PBXact system and I'm trying to generate a flowchart that outlines all the possible ways calls can flow through the system. I attempted to use Copilot and fed it some config files from a backup, but the resulting diagram was pretty poor and didn't capture many important details. I know AI has its limitations, but isn't it capable of handling this kind of task effectively? I'm looking for an easier way to visualize the input and output through my PBX. For context, while exploring the data, I noticed a rarely used number still routing to a discontinued vendor, which helped me fix an issue before it was reported. I can see the potential for this work but suspect the AI context might be too expansive for accurate diagramming. Any suggestions?

It sounds like a clunky process, but I see where you're going with this. AI tools are still catching up with the complexity of setups like yours, but keep an eye out! In a couple of years, they could get a lot better at handling things like this. Who knows, it might be more effective then!

What PBX system are you using, just to get more insight? It's good to know whether you're working with PBXact, FreePBX, or something like Asterisk, as that can affect the flowcharting options available.

It's PBXact, which is essentially FreePBX and Asterisk combined. Just trying to find the best tools for mapping it all out!

AI can indeed struggle with large configuration files and complex situations, like PBX routing. I'll suggest breaking your setup into smaller chunks and mapping the flows step-by-step instead. It might yield more accurate and useful diagrams that are easier to follow in the end!

You might not want to blame the AI entirely here. With complex PBX systems, especially if they've been layered over years without a proper architecture review, it can be hard to represent everything cleanly in one diagram. Sometimes you end up with diagrams that look more like a kid's art project than an actual flowchart! Maybe try simplifying your approach or breaking it down into smaller parts. That could make it easier for the AI to work with.

Well said! Often, the more complexity you throw at AI, the harder it gets to handle. If you can separate your config into logical steps or layers, you'll likely see much better results in the diagrams.
