I have a powerful Windows 11 computer set up with two monitors, each connected to its own video port. This setup works great, but sometimes I want to use one of those monitors as a second screen for my laptop. Currently, I unplug the HDMI cable from the desktop to connect it to my laptop, but I'm concerned this constant plugging and unplugging might damage the port.
To solve this, I bought an HDMI switch, thinking I could keep the monitor connected and just choose which computer to display. However, I can't get any signal through the switch; the monitor just says it's in standby mode. I've tried several brands of HDMI switches without success. I know splitters won't work for my needs, so I'm reaching out for advice on how to set up my monitors effectively without risking any hardware damage.

If the problem is mainly about wear on the ports, using a female-to-female HDMI adapter could help lessen the direct stress on your monitor's port. Just make sure to try the powered switch as well to see if it resolves the issue before going the adapter route!
It sounds like you might need a powered HDMI switch. These switches help maintain signal strength, especially when you're switching between devices. Regular switches might not have enough power to handle that.

Great idea! I'll check into getting a powered switch first, and if that doesn't work, I'll definitely try the female-to-female adapter. Thanks for your suggestion!
