How Can I Edit and Transfer Family Videos to a USB at Home?

I'm trying to create a special USB drive with selected clips from our family's home movies, which were converted from VHS to digital format. I already have a copy of the videos, but I'd like to edit them before making a third copy for my aunt. The original home movies come from three different VHS tapes, each containing unique clips. I want to use video editing software to cut, paste, and arrange the clips in chronological order. Is there a way to do this at home? I would love any recommendations for software that could help me with this task!

You can definitely edit the videos at home! Just stick the USB with the video files into your computer, and you can use some software to cut and rearrange the clips. Programs like DaVinci Resolve or Shotcut are great for beginners; they might seem daunting, but there are tons of tutorials online to guide you through the process.

Once you get the software installed, importing the clips is pretty easy. You just drag and drop your files into the program, and from there, you can cut out the parts you want. There are also many tutorials online showing how to arrange and edit your timeline!

I recommend trying Lossless Cut; it’s super user-friendly and allows you to split videos without losing quality. If you're on Windows, you can easily install it through the command prompt. Just drag and drop your video files in, and you’ll be good to go!

Thanks for the suggestion! Lossless Cut sounds perfect for what I'm looking to do.

So the first step is to see how your files are organized on the USB. If each tape is a separate file, you can easily copy them around. If everything is in one big file, then yes, some editing software is definitely needed to cut and arrange the clips the way you want.
