How Can I Feel Secure Using Linux?

I'm planning to switch my dad's PC to Linux Mint Cinnamon to test it out. I want to use it like a regular computer for gaming, browsing, and other general tasks. However, I have concerns about security, especially when it comes to storing sensitive information like my Steam account. It feels like Linux requires me to be more proactive about security than Windows, where I had ESET antivirus handling it for me. I'm curious if others have felt this way and how they manage their security on Linux. What steps can I take to feel safe using it?

If you want an out-of-the-box safe experience, consider using distributions like Bazzite or Fedora. Bazzite is immutable, making it hard for malware to take hold, and Fedora comes with SELinux preconfigured for extra security. Just make sure to download apps from trusted sources, and you should be good to go.

Honestly, Linux is generally safer than Windows when it comes to privacy. I've been using Linux for years without issues. Just remember to practice safe online habits, like avoiding random downloads and keeping your software updated. If there’s a specific threat you’re worried about, that might help narrow down your approach to security!

You mentioned your concerns about Steam; there's nothing inherently risky about installing it on Linux. Just get it from the official website or your distro’s package manager. In terms of Linux security overall, it’s actually rarer to find viruses targeting it compared to Windows, so as long as you stick to safe practices, you should feel secure.
