How Can I Gain Hands-On Kubernetes Experience as a Manager?

Hey everyone! I'm currently in a management position and I feel like I've missed out on the whole container revolution, especially Kubernetes. I've spent 15 years in the industry, but most of it was in the old-school VM era, and now my role has become pretty hands-off with technology. I haven't contributed directly to production code in years, and now I'm in a tough spot where Kubernetes experience seems essential for moving forward, even in management roles. I've had a few conversations, but I haven't landed any interviews because I lack that hands-on experience with K8s. Unfortunately, my current job doesn't offer many opportunities to work with Kubernetes directly. I'm open to investing in the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) course but I'm hesitant because it feels like a big financial risk. I'd love to hear your thoughts and any suggestions on how I can gain practical K8s experience!

You might want to check out 'Kubernetes the Hard Way' on GitHub. It really helps in understanding the core concepts of K8s from the ground up.

Thanks! I've loved Kelsey Hightower's material before, so I’m excited to dive into this!

While understanding Kubernetes is great, it’s essential to have a good grasp of Docker and how containers work. Starting with Docker can really help build a solid foundation before jumping into K8s.

I get that! I do know how kubectl works and can discuss Kubernetes architecture—just lacking on the hands-on level.

The CKA course isn’t bad, but just a heads up, the platform can feel a bit outdated. You'll mostly see text readings and limited lab instructions, so it's not super interactive. I haven't used KodeKloud, but I hear good things about it for practical learning. You could also set up a local cluster or try it out on EC2. Plus, the CKA exam questions are available online, which can be a great way to prep.

Thanks for the heads up! KodeKloud sounds interesting, I’ll take a look at their courses too.

One of the best ways to get started is to deploy Minikube on your local machine and just play around with it. Once you feel confident, try setting up a K3s single-node cluster on a VM. It’s a great way to learn about storage and networking before moving on to a more advanced multi-cluster setup. I wouldn't rush into taking the CKA just yet—you might want to get comfortable with the various components of clusters first.

Minikube sounds good! I’ll give it a try, thanks for the suggestion!

Totally agree! Playing with projects locally has really helped me learn as well. I'm a fan of the r/homelab community for resources and ideas!

I really think KodeKloud is the way to go! Even if you don’t end up taking the CKA, the course material is excellent and can turn you into a K8s pro quickly. Self-deploying is helpful, but labs help keep your learning focused without getting overwhelmed by managing your own infrastructure.
