How Can I Improve My Linux Skills and Stay Secure?

I've been hearing from a lot of Linux users that antivirus isn't necessary since Linux is generally secure. However, with Linux gaining popularity, I'm worried about the potential for viruses. Sure, Linux has strong permission settings, but a virus could still lurk in my files until I accidentally execute it, especially since there's not much in the way of effective antivirus software, like clamav. Also, I think a lot of new users might not know all the security practices, making them vulnerable. I'm really hesitant to switch back to Windows since I find some comfort in tools like Malwarebytes and Windows Defender. My main question is, how do I really become proficient with Linux? Do I just need to keep using it, or should I be actively learning more? Also, what additional security steps can I take to protect myself?

It’s a good idea to learn how to use Clamscan! It’s the most commonly recommended antivirus for Linux, so getting familiar with it can help you feel more secure. Just keep in mind that antivirus on Linux is less about stopping individual attacks and more about being cautious and avoiding risky behavior when downloading software. Also, considering that many threats are directed at institutions rather than individual users, the everyday risk for personal computers is lower. But basic security hygiene is still essential!

You're correct that most modern viruses target servers and large institutions rather than individual users. The real threats for individuals often come from identity theft rather than traditional viruses. So while Linux or Mac might get less attention from malicious software, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still prioritize your security practices. Simple things like regular updates and being selective about what software you install can make a big difference. And if you worry about your safety, creating backups and learning about encryption can give you peace of mind.
