How can I improve my Wi-Fi connection between rooms?

I'm having serious issues with my internet connection since my router is just one room away in the living room. Things like playing Fortnite have become unplayable due to lag, and streaming services keep stopping every few minutes. Download speeds are also frustratingly slow. I was wondering if I need to buy a Wi-Fi extender or something similar to improve the connection. Running an Ethernet cable is difficult because of my flat's layout, so I'm looking for alternatives. Any suggestions?

Keep in mind that all routers have limited power. Walls can really block the signal strength. If you're open to it, a high-quality router with an Ethernet setup might really increase your speed. Another idea is to set up a Wi-Fi access point with a CAT 6 cable running from your main router. But if that’s too much hassle, a Wi-Fi repeater could work too.

Powerline adapters are a decent option if running a cable is off the table. They can provide good throughput for gaming, even though they might not look fancy. Just be aware that they can have issues with interference, particularly if they're plugged into extension leads.

To get to the bottom of this, we need to consider a few more specifics about your setup. How far apart are the router and your computer? What’s blocking the signal? If your door is open, does that help at all? Also, are other devices in your room faring better with the Wi-Fi connection? Lastly, did your new ISP give you a different router? That could also be a factor.

Ideally, for gaming, you should be wired in with an Ethernet cable for the best performance. However, if that's not an option for you, the right Wi-Fi setup can work too. If you can connect to a stable 5GHz or even 6GHz network, you might find it can be just fine for gaming as well.

First off, it’s worth troubleshooting the connection. Try moving your computer temporarily to the living room where it's closer to the router. If the internet works perfectly there, it means the issue is the signal strength. You could fix this by getting a Wi-Fi extender, or positioning a good quality repeater near your room's doorway. If moving to the living room doesn’t improve things, there might be a problem with your computer, the router itself, or your ISP might be having issues.
