I'm really worried because someone keeps logging into my Gmail account, and I want to find out who they are. Is there a way to find the location of a device just by using its IP address?

Honestly, it seems like the bigger issue here is how they are accessing your Gmail. You might want to prioritize changing your password and updating your security settings instead of trying to track an IP.

Generally, the best you can do is find out a rough city location, assuming they're not on a VPN. But, you probably won't get much more than that.

If you're curious, you can try using "whois [IP address]" from a command prompt. It gives you a general idea of where the IP is associated, though that doesn't necessarily mean it's where the actual user is.

It really depends. Some IP addresses can tell you very little—often just pointing to a service provider or a specific server. However, others can give you a rough idea of where someone lives, especially if they have a large ISP that assigns IPs based on geographic areas. But keep in mind, if they're using a VPN, you're pretty much out of luck unless you involve law enforcement. I suggest focusing on securing your Gmail instead. Change your password immediately, using a strong passphrase, and enable multi-factor authentication.

Absolutely agree! Once, AOL's IPs all pointed to Reston, Virginia, regardless of where users were! You're spot on about being able to pinpoint only so close with some ISPs.

Good point! Even if you know the area, it doesn't guarantee you know who it is. Always better to enhance your security.
