How Can I Mount My 2nd GPU Lower for Better Cooling?

I'm looking for some creative ideas on how to shift my dual fan RTX 3060 lower than its PCIe slot to create more space from my RTX 3090 for improved cooling. I'm using a 15+ year old HAF922 case, and it seems like quite the challenge! I upgraded from an ASUS Dual RTX 3060 to a Zotac Trinity OC RTX 3090, and now the 3060 is just sitting in a box. My plan is to set it up as a secondary GPU for some "AI work." However, since the RTX 3090 is 2.5 slots wide, my 3060 is now sitting too close to it for effective airflow—there's barely a centimeter (less than half an inch) separating them! I thought about using a horizontal mounting bracket with a short PCIe extension cable to move the 3060 a bit further away, but I'm worried about stability due to space constraints on the motherboard and the PCIe slot. Plus, I'm hesitant since I want to avoid a case upgrade or having to move one GPU outside the case. Anyone have suggestions?

A PCIe riser combined with a vertical mount could be your best bet here. Just keep in mind that this might affect stability, so you'll need to secure everything well to prevent any wobbles.

Honestly, with your setup, you might have limited space options. A solid PCIe riser with a sturdy vertical bracket can help, but airflow can get tricky. Adding some directed intake fans might offset that, just keep an eye on the airflow patterns in your old case.

You might consider posting in a dedicated hardware forum for more insights; there are folks there who have tackled dual GPU setups and can offer specific advice on mounting solutions.

Thanks for the tip! I might do that.

Have you looked into changing the CUDA enumeration order in your system? It could help resolve some of your GPU issues without needing riser cables. Check the CUDA programming guide for info on setting up a system profile. It might be simpler than you think!

I’ll definitely check that out, thanks!
