Hey tech-savvy friends! I recently relocated my retail shop to a new spot that used to be an office, and the lease includes internet, which is super convenient. The setup here involved a yellow cable (it says "CAT5e") that connects from a wall jack to the LAN/WAN port on the router. I'm currently wanting to place the router behind my sales counter, where there's another wall jack, but when I plugged it in there, I got the network signal but no actual internet connection. I'm puzzled if this new jack is faulty or if I need some kind of adapter. The working wall jack isn't labeled, but the one I want to use is marked "HOME5e." Any guidance on how to troubleshoot this or if there's a specific way to test the jack would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

It sounds like the wall jack you're trying to use may not be connected to the internet at all. I'd recommend checking with your landlord to see if they can give you the details about which jack is active. If you’re in a professional space, they might be able to easily move your connection to the new jack.
Make sure to trace the cables back to their source; it’ll help you identify where the internet connection actually starts. If you can get a toner and probe tool, it's great for figuring out which cable goes where. It might uncover some easy solutions as well!
You might be better off calling in a low-voltage wiring specialist to help you sort this. They can check the wiring and make sure everything is set up correctly. If they can’t fix it, they might recommend running a new cable to where you want the router.
Good idea! Having a professional look at it could save me a lot of trouble.
That makes sense! I'll definitely ask my landlord. Thanks for the tip!
