Hey everyone! I've recently transitioned to using Linux, and I'm loving the experience! However, I've run into a bit of a snag while trying to set up a second monitor. I picked up an old Samsung monitor that only has a VGA input, but my main GPU only has HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. To connect it, I ended up using my motherboard's integrated GPU, which has led to some serious performance issues when gaming. For instance, when playing CS2, my frame rates drop from around 80/90 to 30/35, with lots of stuttering. Factorio experiences similar stutters, though frame rates are a bit stabilized. I did some searching online but couldn't find helpful solutions. Just to share my setup: I'm using an AMD RX 6400 as my main GPU, an Intel HD 4600 as the iGPU for the second monitor, and my specs include an i5 4590 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and I'm on CachyOS with KDE Plasma. Any advice on how to improve this setup would be super appreciated! ❤️

You're definitely better off connecting both monitors to the same dedicated GPU to avoid the issues you're facing. If your AMD RX 6400 has enough outputs, that would be ideal. Also, it might be a good idea to disable the iGPU in your BIOS to prevent it from interfering with your gaming performance.
It sounds like you've hit a common issue with dual GPU setups in Linux. Basically, when you're connecting a monitor to the motherboard's iGPU, that's where everything gets rendered, causing significant lag and performance drops, particularly in demanding games like CS2. You might want to try disabling the second monitor while gaming since Linux doesn't handle GPU syncs between integrated and dedicated GPUs very well. It could help majorly with your performance issues.
I agree with the others! Performance issues can arise from having one monitor on the integrated GPU. You could check your system settings to ensure that your dedicated GPU is the primary one being used. While having dual monitors with different GPUs can work, it tends to be tricky with Linux, so consolidating everything onto the RX 6400 might save you a lot of headaches!
