How Can I Re-enter the DevOps Field After a Long Break?

I have worked in DevOps positions for over a decade, but after spending the last four years in a government job, I feel like I've really lost touch with up-to-date skills and relevant technologies. My previous job kept me away from important tools like Kubernetes and major project deployments, where I mainly handled smaller automation tasks. I got comfortable in that position, but I was laid off during recent cost-cutting measures.

Now, I'm trying to figure out how to get back on track. I'm likely going to take a lower IT support position just to make ends meet since I'm running out of money and lost my apartment. Unemployment isn't enough to cover my living expenses. I need to study in the evenings because I don't feel prepared for interviews after having some bad experiences recently. I'd like to re-certify as an AWS Solutions Architect Associate and might also study for the CKA. On a side note, I'm feeling uneasy about the rise of AI and am looking to focus on alternatives. Any advice on where to start or how to course-correct would be appreciated!

Consider diving into some advanced certifications. While they may not hold as much weight as they used to, they can still provide a structured way to get you studying and at least give you something to show potential employers. But honestly, if you’re feeling burnt out, try to find even just a little passion for what you’re studying—it’ll make the process much more manageable! When I don't enjoy something, I find forcing enthusiasm helps, even if it’s tough.

That's a great point! But what do you think about all the chatter that certifications are pretty much meaningless now? I keep seeing that more and more.

Yeah, there's definitely a debate around that, but having a certification can at least get your foot in the door rather than just an empty resume. Networking and projects also matter a lot!

Don’t count yourself out before someone else does. It sounds like you might be considering taking a step back into IT support, but I’d advise against it if you can. Aim for a DevOps role that meets your comfort level. Check out roadmap.sh to identify what skills you need to brush up on. Self-study is key!

I totally agree; it was just a last-ditch thought. I’ve been stuck financially after five months without work, and it’s hard to see the way forward. But I feel like I really need to get into K8s and the latest DevOps trends to be market-ready.
