How can I recover deleted video files from my phone?

I'm in a bit of a bind here. I was editing a video using CapCut and thought it would be a good idea to delete all the clips I had already used, thinking I wouldn't need them anymore. To make matters worse, I selected the option to skip the recycle bin, so the files were deleted directly. Now when I open CapCut to finish my video, it shows a black screen saying "video or photo is deleted or moved in your device. Recover it in your album."

I'm using a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS and my gallery app is called Fossify. Unfortunately, the videos are also missing from the default gallery app that came with GrapheneOS. I don't use any cloud services to potentially save my videos either. Is there any way to get these files back? I'd really appreciate any help!

When files are deleted, they aren’t immediately wiped from your device; instead, they’re marked as free space until new data overwrites them. You might have a chance to recover the deleted videos with specialized recovery software like Recuva. Just keep in mind, if the files have been partially overwritten, they could be corrupted. It ain't exactly a straightforward process for most users, so if the videos are really important, consulting a professional data recovery service might be your best bet.

That said, if you deleted the clips directly through the app while editing, there’s a strong chance they’re not recoverable. Many mobile editing apps use temporary cache storage, which gets cleared when you close the app, meaning the clips likely aren’t stored anywhere permanent once you delete them in-app.

Thanks for the insight! I get that it’s not vital, just a bit of a disappointment. Lesson learned about preemptively deleting files!

Yeah, true, if the app uses TRIM like on flash storage, the data might be gone for good after deletion.
