I'm struggling to reset my Apple ID because I can't remember my password on my Mac. The problem is that my old phone number is linked to the account, and I'm unable to change it in the settings when I'm prompted. My Apple account is now locked, and I need to verify my ID but can't proceed with any steps. What can I do to regain access?

You can try visiting iforgot.apple.com and entering your email and the old phone number. Follow the prompts about not receiving the code. You might have to go through the account recovery process unless you have another device that's signed in.
I recommend contacting Apple support directly. But make sure you can prove ownership of the device, as many issues arise from users trying to unlock stolen products, which can’t be done.
Of course, I do own it!
Unfortunately, there’s really no next step if you don’t remember your old phone number. Apple’s account recovery process requires that number to get started, and there aren't really any workarounds for that.
So I can't ever get back into my account?

Why do they make it so difficult? So, if I just follow the prompts, I can reset my password?
