How Can I Set Up User Roles for My Web App Without Using Big Solutions?

I'm developing a web app and want to implement a user management system where users can sign up and log in using their email addresses. I have three distinct user roles that each account will need to have. While I'm aware of services like Auth0 and Clerk, they feel a bit excessive for what I need. I'm looking for alternative methods to allow user sign-ups and manage roles without relying on those bigger solutions. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

When you mention assigning roles, do you already have a Role table where you plan to store something like `role.user_id` to connect users to their roles?

Yes, I have three roles: basic, pro, and enterprise. They've been set up in my JavaScript files and checked by the user ID upon login. Basic is free, while pro and enterprise unlock additional features. I want to create user accounts but prefer not to store their information directly in the web app. I was also considering webhooks to connect to a Postgres database in AWS.

To give you a solid answer, I’d need to know more about your tech setup. What's your stack like? How and where's your data stored? At a basic level, user accounts are just entries in a 'users' table in your database. You look them up, validate, and authenticate. Without knowing your specifics, everyone will just suggest their personal favorites.

I switched to Firebase's free solution, and I have to say it's pretty handy. Once your user base starts growing, having that email identity management really comes in handy!
