How can I stay productive in my new helpdesk job?

Hey everyone! I recently switched jobs from a junior sysadmin role to a helpdesk position. Although it might sound like a step back, I'm actually happier here and getting paid better. However, I find myself with a lot of free time at work, which is a bit challenging since I want to keep improving my skills. I'm doing well in my role—no complaints so far—but I'm not sure how to utilize this extra time effectively. I've heard suggestions like documenting issues or looking for problems to solve, but in this large company, those tasks are already taken care of. I'm also considering a future in networking but I'm not entirely sure yet. Any tips on how to stay productive and enhance my skills while on the job?

Make the most of this time by studying or exploring new technologies that excite you. You could choose to align with your company's goals for potential promotions or follow your own path that feels more suitable for you. A few years back, I focused on cloud platforms instead of what my job suggested, and that really worked out for me. Automation and cloud tech are accessible and can keep you engaged without needing a lot of physical setup.

I've been in similar shoes! I got my CCNA recently but often find myself just watching YouTube between tasks. It's a bit boring. I'm trying to find ways to keep busy and productive. Maybe consider some practice questions for certifications or reading up on relevant tech articles. Also, check if your company offers any training resources or pays for exams!

I recommend checking out online courses on platforms like Udemy. I took a long while to get out of helpdesk, and studying really helped me level up my skills. You might want to focus on areas that interest you or that align with your goals, like networking. Considering your current role, you could use this downtime to dive deep into topics you find interesting!

Definitely use this time to study! You can do practice questions for certifications you aim to get or read articles that pique your interest and are somewhat related to your role. It's a great way to utilize that downtime effectively. Plus, see if your company could cover any training costs!
