I have an older Lenovo laptop that's really low on storage space and it's been a long time since I last restarted it. I usually only power it off when it completely dies, which I know isn't great. Recently, I decided to restart it to give it a refresh, but now it's stuck on the screen that says 'preparing to configure Windows, don't turn off your computer.' It's been like this for an eternity, and there's no progress bar or anything. I'm worried I might not have enough space for the updates anyway, so I need to find a way to get past this screen. I really need to use this laptop for college and can't keep borrowing my family's.

If you force shut down your laptop, you might create more problems. Since it sounds like you haven’t restarted in a while, there could be a ton of updates trying to install. Sometimes, it can take several hours to process, especially on older devices. I’d recommend waiting it out if you can, but if it’s completely frozen, you might need to hold down the power button to force a shutdown, just be careful with that since it can lead to issues later.
Hosing it means you could end up messing up your system really badly. Usually, it's a big risk to just turn it off while it's updating. Unfortunately, if your laptop is running low on space, that’s likely why it’s having trouble finishing the updates. If you manage to get it turned back on eventually, maybe consider freeing up some space to help it run smoother next time.
