How can I tell if I’ve downloaded a virus?

I accidentally clicked the download button on a sketchy website that popped up, and it said "download failed" before the site closed. I checked my Chrome download history and my download folder, and there are no files there. I also unplugged my internet and ran both a quick scan and a full scan with my antivirus, and neither found anything. Additionally, I looked through Task Manager for any suspicious processes but didn't see anything unusual. Am I safe? I've heard that some viruses can work without being saved as files. Is that true? I'd appreciate any advice.

Yep, you're good! Most common viruses need you to actively download and run them. Unless you're a high-profile target or have sensitive info, you likely don’t need to worry. Still, keeping your antivirus up to date is always a good move!

You're probably safe. All signs point to nothing happening. Fileless malware does exist, but it usually needs a specific action to trigger it and just clicking a button on a website typically isn’t enough to get something like that running. If you want to feel more secure, running a second antivirus scan can help.

You should be alright! If nothing downloaded and your antivirus didn’t catch anything, it’s likely that you're in the clear. Those scam sites often try to trick you into clicking download, but if there’s no file in your downloads, chances are nothing’s on your system. Still, if you want to be extra cautious, running another full scan can give you peace of mind.
