How Can I Tell if My CPU is Bottlenecking My Gaming Performance?

I've been noticing that many games I play lately aren't performing well, and I'm trying to figure out if a CPU bottleneck is the culprit. My specs are an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, RTX 3080 Ti, and 128GB of RAM. Despite adjusting settings like resolution and DLSS, few changes improve performance. Older and newer titles alike show inconsistent frame rates and occasionally high CPU usage, while GPU usage barely goes above 70%. For example, TotalWarhammer 3 benchmarks show solid GPU performance at 90-99%, but during larger battles, my frame rates drop to around 30 fps with surprisingly low GPU usage. I've seen others with similar builds play smoothly at 2K resolution, but my performance feels off. Outside of monitoring usage and temperature, what are some effective methods to diagnose these performance issues more accurately?

If your GPU isn’t hitting close to 100% usage, the bottleneck is probably the CPU. Since the GPU isn’t the limitation, tweaking graphic settings will likely have minimal effect on performance. If you really think you have a bottleneck, upgrading to a better gaming CPU might be your best bet.

When your GPU isn’t at 100% usage, it usually points to the CPU holding things back. The 5950X has a lot of cores, but many games can’t take advantage of all 16; they might be maxing out the first handful of cores while leaving the others idle, which can confuse performance metrics. That’s why it might show only 50% overall usage. It's definitely more about raw single-core speeds for gaming.

If your GPU usage is around 70%, it sounds like you might have a CPU bottleneck. Your 5950X is incredible for productivity but not the best for gaming since most games can't utilize so many cores effectively. Generally, bottlenecking is more apparent at lower resolutions with higher frame rates because the CPU has to work harder to push frames to the GPU. By the way, what kind of RAM do you have? Slower RAM can also hit your gaming performance. I'd recommend running 3D Mark or similar benchmarks to compare your results with others who have similar setups.
