How Can I Tell If My Internet Issue is on My End or My ISP’s?

I've been dealing with an internet outage for the past 12 hours, and I'm not sure if the problem lies with my equipment or with my ISP, which is Spectrum. When I try connecting with my iPhone, it shows that I'm connected to Wi-Fi, but I can't actually access the internet. Any tips on how I can determine if it's an issue on my side or something they need to fix?

The quickest way to figure this out is by calling Spectrum. They can check to see if there are any known outages in your area or help troubleshoot your modem. They might be able to see if your modem is offline or if there's a wider issue.

If you're not sure about that, restarting your modem is a good next step. Unplug it, wait a minute or two, and then plug it back in. Sometimes modems can get stuck and a reset can do the trick. You might also want to check the lights on your modem to see if any indicators suggest something's wrong.

Sounds easy enough! I’ll give it a try.

Don't overlook checking all the lights on your modem. Each light indicates different statuses. If you're not seeing all the right lights, especially the WAN light, that could point to an issue at the ISP's end or with your equipment itself. Might also be worth verifying if any work is happening near your location that could affect your connection.

For serious issues, accessing your router’s firmware can give you more insight. If you can confirm it's connecting and obtaining a valid IP, but you still can't load sites, then you might want to escalate things directly to Spectrum. They can guide you further if the issue is on their side.

Thanks! If I mess up that part, I guess I’ll just call them.

You can try pinging your gateway. If you’re able to reach it but can’t get to external sites like 8.8.8.8, then it’s likely an ISP issue. But if you can't reach your gateway, then there's probably something wrong with your connection at home.

What’s pinging a gateway? Can you break that down for me?

I can ping the gateway but not 8.8.8.8. What does that mean?
