How Can I Turn My Old PC into a VM Server?

Hey everyone! I recently checked out a video on Zach's Tech Turf about home servers and got really interested in using my old PC as a server for running virtual machines. My laptop struggles with VMs, and I need a reliable setup to practice Linux for work and for future learning. I've looked for guides on this topic but haven't found any that are useful. Has anyone here gone through this process and could share their experience or any helpful guides?

What exactly are you looking for in a guide? The setup could cover so many different topics! If you want to start with a hypervisor, try installing ProxMox; it's a pretty solid choice for managing VMs.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’m mainly trying to figure out which hypervisor to choose and how to connect to it from my laptop once I have it running. Could I get that info from the hypervisor's documentation?

Keep in mind that running VMs requires a decent amount of processing power. Ideally, you should have around 2 cores and 4GB of RAM just for the base setup, but realistically, having 4 cores or more per VM would be best. If your old machine only has 4-6 cores, it might struggle with more demanding tasks. Just something to consider before you dive in!

If I have an Intel Core 2 Duo with 12GB of RAM, could I still run one VM?
