I'm still running Windows 7 Home Premium on my custom PC in 2025, and it's been working great. The problem is, I want to upgrade to either Pro or Ultimate to utilize more than 16GB of RAM for my photo and video editing work. I tried using the Windows Anytime Upgrade before, and it worked perfectly at first. Unfortunately, after a software error forced me to restore my system from a backup, I reverted back to Home Premium. Now, I can't seem to get the upgrade to work again; it just keeps failing. I'm stuck in a loop of attempts. I see scripts available for upgrading to Windows 10/11, but I can't find anything for an incremental upgrade. Anyone have tips on how I can get this to work?

I found a PowerShell script that’s supposed to help with the upgrade: [Set-WindowsCbsEdition](https://github.com/asdcorp/Set-WindowsCbsEdition). It looked promising, but unfortunately, when I tried executing it, it failed to upgrade just like the Anytime Upgrade. If you decide to go this route, double-check your execution method since I had to run it as an admin in PowerShell, and it still didn’t work for me. But it might be worth a shot!
Honestly, it might just be time to think about migrating to Windows 10 or 11. Your workflows might be supported better in the new OS, and running video editing software on old software is risky. I know it’s a hassle to set everything up again, but it could save you a lot of headaches down the line.
You definitely need a valid license key for the Ultimate version. With that key, you can change the product edition using the graphical interface or command line tools like DISM. Just be aware that any downgrade or switch you’re making puts you at risk since Windows 7 is now end-of-life, which means no security updates. If you're set on upgrading, make sure you have your key handy and follow the command prompt method, but it may require a reboot and a bit of patience.
It sounds like you're struggling with the limitations of Home Premium since it caps RAM at 16GB. Upgrading to Pro should solve your RAM issue, but you're going to need a proper upgrade key to get it done. Also, DISM might be your best bet here. Just remember that Windows 7 support is pretty much nonexistent now, so if anything goes wrong after the upgrade, it's on you.

Yeah, I know I'm taking a risk with Windows 7, but it's my preferred environment for editing. I just want this upgrade done without losing everything!
