I've had my home PC, which I built back in 2015, running on a Windows version I got from a buddy. I've been using the same version since then, and I've noticed that I need a newer version to access work files from home. I'm pretty certain I need Windows 11. Is there a simple way for me to purchase and activate this upgrade without losing my current files?

It's important to know what version you're currently running. If it's Windows 10, you can upgrade to 11 using Windows Update quite easily. But if you're on any older version, like Windows 8 or 8.1, you might have to do a fresh install. Keep that in mind!
Actually, for the Windows App, you might not need an upgrade if you're using a Pro edition of Windows. You can enable remote desktop settings, which is what you need for accessing work remotely. Just remember, if you're planning to connect outside your local network, using a VPN is a smart move!
Regarding accessing your work files with the Windows App, you don’t necessarily need Windows 11. Many applications that work with Windows App can also run on Windows 10. It's worth checking which app you're talking about, as it might not be Windows 11 exclusive. Just keep in mind that Windows 10 may stop receiving updates soon, which is a concern.
Yeah, it's just the Windows App I'm trying to use, and I believe I'm on 8.1.

I'm pretty sure I'm on 8.1, but I still see the 'activate Windows' message. I have some limited customization options though, like changing wallpapers.
