How Can I Use Autounattend.xml with a Fresh Windows 11 Install?

I'm trying to simplify the process of installing Windows 11 using the autounattend.xml file, but as a novice, I'm hitting some snags. My steps so far are: downloading the official installation ISO, generating an autounattend.xml file from a website, using Rufus to create the installation USB, and then placing the autounattend.xml file in the root of the USB. However, when I went to edit the USB to correct some errors in the file, I found that the USB was mounted as a DVD and I couldn't make changes, plus my original autounattend.xml was missing. This forces me to redo the Rufus process, which takes over 30 minutes! Is there a more efficient way to handle this? Also, I'm facing issues with IRST drivers because my SSD isn't showing up during installation, and the driver downloads from my laptop's manufacturer are not valid. I've encountered this problem before and can't remember how I resolved it. Why does Microsoft complicate things like this?

It sounds like your autounattend.xml might be misconfigured and affecting how your USB shows up. Consider leaving partition settings as they are unless you're sure about changing them. You could also use the Media Creation Tool to bypass these issues entirely.

Honestly, you might be overcomplicating things with Rufus. Why not just use the Media Creation Tool? You can place the answer file in the root directory without much fuss. It could save you a lot of time in the end.

Yeah, using the Media Creation Tool does sound easier. It's just that I want the flexibility to update the autounattend.xml file later without redoing everything.

I strongly suggest not mixing autounattend with Rufus; it can create unexpected issues. You can do a lot more with autounattend once you get the hang of it. I have a bookmarked autounattend generator that simplifies the process for new users; it might be helpful for you!

Have you thought about using Ventoy instead of Rufus? It makes it much easier to manage multiple ISOs and allows for quick updates to the autounattend.xml file without recreating the USB from scratch. It's a game changer for installations like this. You mentioned the IRST drivers – that's a common headache. I’ve faced similar issues before; be sure you're getting the right version for your hardware!

Ventoy sounds like what I need! That issue with the SSD not showing up is frustrating. Have you checked if the drivers from the manufacturer are compatible with your version of Windows?

Just a heads-up—Rufus makes multiple partitions on the USB, which might be why you're having editing problems. Make sure you're targeting the right partition when trying to make changes.
