How Can We Streamline DevEx with Platform Engineering?

Hi everyone! We're currently using Terraform throughout our organization, but it's mainly a lot of copy-pasting with no centralized modules. We also have Kubernetes and ArgoCD in the mix. The issue is that the process for creating new services and infrastructure for our developers is a bit confusing and not very user-friendly. We're tasked with improving this process to allow developers to self-serve more efficiently. I've looked into options like Crossplane, but honestly, it's left me more confused. Any tips or experiences you can share would be super helpful since there are so many varying opinions out there!

It seems like you might be in need of an Internal Developer Platform (IDP). This could help by templating out your service creation process and reducing the clutter for developers. Two popular options are Port and Backstage. Port is great for getting something up quickly with pre-built services, while Backstage is open-source and might work well for larger teams that can manage it, though it does come with operational overhead. Might be worth considering if you can tackle the costs and maintenance!

Yeah, but just a heads up: Port might be way too pricey for some budgets, and Backstage requires a lot of maintenance which can be tough to justify in the long run.
