How Do I Change My Apple ID Email Before Retiring?

I'm about to retire after over 30 years at my job, and I've been using my work email as my primary Apple ID for as long as I can remember. Now, I need to switch everything over to my new Gmail account since my work email won't be accessible anymore. I recently created an iCloud email to use as a recovery option for my Gmail. My goal is to update my Apple ID to use the iCloud email instead of my work email. I'm feeling a bit anxious about this process because I've heard stories of people losing access to their accounts. I own a MacBook, but I primarily use my iPad and iPhone, along with my Apple Watch. Should I go to the Genius Bar for help, or is there a way I can safely do this on my own? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's actually not recommended to use your iCloud email as the primary email for your Apple ID. If anything goes wrong with your Apple account, you'd lose access to that email too. Instead, I suggest using your Gmail as the primary email for Apple. That's what I do. My Apple ID is linked to my Gmail, and I use my iCloud email for everything else.

I was thinking of using the iCloud for recovery since I heard it might be safer. Someone suggested I set up a new account for Gmail since I'm already in the Apple system. I've also heard good things about ProtonMail. Do you think that would work better?
