How do I play games in 4K on my 1080p monitor with an AMD GPU?

I've been using Linux for a while and typically worked with Nvidia GPUs. Recently, I upgraded to an AMD 7900 XTX, and while everything's been working smoothly, I've run into a problem. On my Nvidia setup, I could easily adjust the resolution settings in the Nvidia X Server Settings to view 4K content on my 1080p monitor. I would change the ViewPortIn option to 3840x2160, and despite the desktop being tiny, it allowed me to play games at 4K without issues. Now, with my AMD GPU, I can't find a similar solution. I've tried using xrandr with no luck, as my games don't recognize the 4K resolution. Any suggestions on how to make this work?

You could buy a 4K monitor if you're set on that resolution. It might be an investment, but it could save you the hassle.

Yeah, I'm considering that as a last resort, but I wanted to explore other options first.

Honestly, you can't actually play games in 4K on a 1080p monitor. It’s like trying to watch a color movie on an old black-and-white TV—the extra pixels just aren’t there on your screen.

Look into AMD's Virtual Super Resolution (VSR). It's a feature that might let you achieve something similar. You could check the Gamescope wiki for more detailed instructions on how to set it up.

Thanks for that! I’ll definitely check out the wiki for more info.

You can try using a method called game scope. It allows you to render games at 4K, then downscale them to 1080p. It's a bit more involved but could give you the visual upgrade you're looking for!
