I want to get my website to show up on google. It is built using the wordpress CMS. It is now ready for people to use and i want to publish it so that people can find it through searching on Google. Can someone explain what I need to do to do this?

You can't really publish a wordpress site on Google. Google is an engine that will go around the internet and try to find all the websites and information it can. Once if finds them, people can look through the results to try and find what they are looking for. So if you want your site to appear in SERP results then you will need to make sure Google are able to crawl it. For this, I would suggest you learn about Google search console and get your website submitted to this. Once you have it submitted, you will be able to track how much of the site they have indexed. Whether you get visitors will depend on how well optimised the website.
