How do I set up automatic GPU switching on Linux?

I'm thinking of switching from Windows 11 to a Linux distribution and need some advice. I have a gaming laptop with an integrated Intel Iris and a dedicated GeForce 3050. In Windows, when I'm not plugged into power, it uses the Intel GPU, but when I connect the charger and start gaming, it switches to the Nvidia GPU automatically. Can I set this kind of automatic switching up on Linux? Will the distribution handle it for me? Also, which distros should I consider? I'm leaning towards Catchy OS or Kubuntu since I prefer KDE over Gnome for my occasional coding and gaming needs. I know Catchy OS is recommended for gaming, but I'm worried about stability since it's Arch-based and I want something that works smoothly and doesn't require constant updates. Any other distro recommendations would be great too!

For Nvidia Optimus, you'll definitely need to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers first. Once you do that, check some guides online for setting it up. As for the distro, if you're into KDE and want stability, consider MX Linux (Debian-based) or Fedora, which offers up-to-date packages and good stability. Linux Mint is also a great option if you prefer a nice interface with stability.

Fedora is a solid choice! It's got a good balance of stability and the latest software. Plus, it supports KDE really well.

You'll probably need to configure it manually. For instance, I have an ASUS laptop and found that while CachyOS had some fixes, I still had to install specific packages to get the GPU switching working properly. It really helps with battery life, so it's worth the effort!

If you're looking for a more straightforward way, it's often done manually. You can set this up through the Nvidia settings or by adjusting the shortcut settings to ensure you're using the right GPU for your applications.
