How Do Upgrades Work in Linux Mint?

Hey everyone! I've been using Linux Mint for about a year now, and with the recent release of version 22.3, I have a few questions about how upgrades work. First, is there any risk of messing up my system during an upgrade to a new version? Second, how do these major updates function? Until now, I've only done minor updates like app and security patches, so I'm not very familiar with the process. Third, is it necessary to update? Like in Windows, where not updating can cause issues, is it similar with Linux Mint? Lastly, how stable are these new versions? Should I update right away, or is it better to wait a bit to see if there are any problems? Thanks a ton for any guidance!

To answer your first question, while there's always a slight risk when upgrading, moving to a point release like 22.2 to 22.3 typically isn't a problem. It mainly involves updates to Mint's specific apps rather than drastic changes to the OS itself. Just keep a backup, and you'll be fine!
For your second question, this is just a minor point upgrade, not a major overhaul, so nothing too complicated.
As for necessity, it’s not essential to upgrade. All Mint 22.x versions will be supported until 2029, so if everything's running smoothly, you can skip it for now. Most users do update, though, as it offers newer features and improvements.
On stability, point releases are usually solid and can typically be done anytime. If you're nearing a major version update, it's wise to wait a little and check for feedback from other users before jumping in.
