How Do You Handle Firmware Updates in Your Office?

I'm curious about how everyone else manages firmware updates for their computers. In my office, we do them quarterly, and it requires me to go to each machine, run the Dell command, and install updates. My boss insists that I should come in on weekends to complete these updates, arguing that it's necessary if a machine locks up with BitLocker, so we can quickly restart it. However, we have four offices, and my main office only has about 15 users. I typically do updates late at night to avoid disturbing anyone, but my boss is really pushing the weekend thing. He works weekends himself and tends to stick around after hours, which makes me feel like he doesn't mind the long hours, but I have a family to consider. I'm looking for advice on how to handle this situation. Thanks in advance!

Honestly, it seems like your boss is a bit out of touch with how these updates can be managed. If you're patching every patch Tuesday, there's really no reason to be chained to the office on weekends unless it's an emergency. You should bring up how you're already managing time after hours effectively and suggest a better plan during regular hours. Ongoing updates should not classify as work emergencies.

I lean on Intune for Windows updates myself. That way, the process becomes largely automated, and BitLocker issues are minimized. If your boss is resistant, maybe show him how others successfully manage it during normal hours using these tools. It's all about finding a compromise without sacrificing your personal time.

Dell Command does provide a CLI for updates — dcu-cli.exe can be utilized for managing these tasks more efficiently. You could set up a system to query your inventory and apply updates without having to manually intervene for each machine, especially if you have other management tools in place. You should definitely run an inventory check regularly to catch any outliers.

For managing firmware updates, I usually rely on Windows Update. I think your boss's concern about machines getting locked with BitLocker is a bit overblown; it’s not a common issue, right? Have you thought about automating the process? Like pausing BitLocker before applying updates? It’s definitely worth looking into! By the way, working weekends should come with overtime pay, so if he pushes that, make sure you stand your ground.
