I'm curious about your experiences with scope creep in freelance projects. How much do you think it cost you last year? Be honest! And what strategies do you use to avoid it? Personally, I lost between $10K and $20K due to clients adding extra features after we agreed on the initial contract.

I send clients a list of what needs to be done, including planning, organizing, and testing, at a fixed project price. For minor tweaks, I usually just absorb them. But for anything that takes over 30 minutes, I ask detailed questions, create a document, and then let them know it’ll go into the backlog for estimation later. Most of the time, they don’t follow up on it, but if they do, it's more work for me.
I lost about $15K to a client who kept asking for 'just one more feature' every couple of weeks. I finally switched to fixed pricing with a change request form, and that has really cut down the bleed to maybe a grand annually from scope creep. Lesson learned!
I totally feel that pain!
It's crucial to document everything before signing a contract. I make sure that any changes that arise after signing are clearly stated. This way, it's easier to manage expectations and costs when new requests come up.
What if changes arise after signing? How do you handle that?
To avoid scope creep, I have a strict contract that outlines all features, and I charge an additional hourly rate for anything outside that scope. This keeps clients aware that any extra work will come with higher costs.
Are you able to manage that situation completely?
How long does it usually take to draft new features and get customer approval?
I send clients a detailed list of features in a document when quoting. Once they agree, any small changes get billed separately. This way, there’s no confusion, and they know upfront that modifications will cost extra.
So does this mean you bill for every little correction or additional feature?
How much time does it take you to create and get approval for a change order?

So do you create a new document for additional features or adjust the original contract? And how long does that process usually take?
