How to Boot Ubuntu Without a GUI and Access the Terminal Quickly?

I'm looking to boot into Ubuntu without any graphical user interface, just straight into the terminal. I tried using `sudo systemctl set-default multi-user.target`, which worked, but when I try to start the desktop environment with `startx`, it runs really slow, and it takes forever to open a terminal. I'm currently using GNOME and I'm wondering if there are alternative options to access my GUI desktop faster or if I should be looking for something else entirely.

If you really want a system without any GUI, consider installing Ubuntu Server. It doesn't come with a graphical environment, making your boot process much faster.

You might want to clarify your needs here. If you want a terminal interface, that's fine, but you might not actually want to give up on the GUI entirely. You could be looking for a very minimal desktop environment instead of no GUI at all.

Instead of messing around with systemd, I recommend using the TTY. You can access it by hitting Ctrl-Alt-F1 through Ctrl-Alt-F6 to log in without a GUI. When you want to switch back to the graphical interface, just press Ctrl-Alt-F7 and you’ll be back to the GUI.
