How to Bypass Stolen Device Protection on an iPhone Without Face ID?

I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 26.4 that belonged to a family member who recently passed away. I've backed up their phone to iCloud, but now I'm trying to erase it so I can transfer my data from my older phone. However, it requires Face ID to disable Stolen Device Protection, which I can't access. Is there a way for me to turn off this protection without using Face ID, or will I need to visit an Apple Store and explain the situation?

Have you tried resetting the phone while you're at their home? I’ve heard that can sometimes help with these issues.

Does iOS 26 actually have that feature? I thought only Android had similar options.

Apple won't be able to completely unlock the phone for you, but they can help with restoring it. You can try doing a recovery mode restore using a computer, or if you have the Apple account password, you can go to iCloud.com and erase it from there instead.
