I'm new to building PCs and I'm trying to figure out what makes a motherboard a good investment. I don't want to go overboard, but I do want something that's powerful, future-proof, and suitable for both gaming and work. I'm considering a B850 motherboard I found online, but I could really use some insights on whether it's a good choice for my setup with a 9800x3d and plans to upgrade to a 5070 or 5070ti in the future. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Motherboards in themselves don’t really impact performance all that much. They’re mostly about compatibility with parts. For your needs, I’d say any B850 board around $200 to $250 should work well. Just make sure it supports what you’re planning to put in it.
For $170, a B850 Gaming Plus board seems like a solid deal. Just make sure to check the features to ensure it meets all your needs!
One thing to consider is the VRM quality, which is critical for power management. A good standard for VRM would be around 10+ for the first number in the spec—anything lower could pose problems with certain CPUs.
The USB connectivity isn’t the best on this board. It does feature Wi-Fi 7 and a pretty good 5G ethernet option, which is nice. At $170, I think it has decent value overall.
