How to Handle a Hacked Work Computer in a Small Business?

I work for a small business with about 20 employees across a couple of offices. Recently, several employees have been locked out of their Microsoft business emails, and we've noticed some unusual activity. Today, some personal phones received Bluetooth connection requests from a work laptop, which makes me really concerned that this laptop might be infected with malware. The only advice given so far has been to run a commercial antivirus (Total AV) on the laptop. Is this an adequate measure? Also, I've connected my personal laptop to the company Wi-Fi but ran scans with rkill, Malwarebytes, and Hitman Pro and found nothing. Should I take any further action, and is it safe to connect my laptop to my home network?

Honestly, your whole team needs a crash course in cybersecurity practices ASAP. It seems like there’s a lack of awareness about these risks.

Do you have a Managed Service Provider (MSP) for IT management? If not, you should consider hiring one with relevant experience. Having an MSP on board can help you navigate through this incident properly. Total AV alone isn’t enough for a business; you need a thorough diagnostic. An MSP might have to bring in their Cyber Incident Response Team to deal with the situation effectively.

Total AV isn't sufficient. If that laptop is compromised, you should isolate it from the network right away and perform a complete system wipe and reinstall. Malware can hide deep, so it's not worth the risk to keep it connected.

I think a full wipe and OS reinstall is necessary for any infected machines. When a computer is compromised, the safest bet is to treat it as untrustworthy. Make sure to change all O365 admin passwords and enable two-factor authentication if it's not set up already. You can’t take chances with infected devices, they might have hidden vulnerabilities that a simple antivirus scan won’t catch.
