I'm trying to set up Zorin OS on my grandma's PC that has an Nvidia NVS 300 graphics card. Is there a way to install the Nvidia 340 driver on this modern Linux distro without having to downgrade the kernel?

Downgrading the kernel can create more problems than it solves. If you're using a distro like Arch, they maintain their own version of Nvidia drivers that work with modern kernels. Alternatively, you might want to check out Mint 21.3 (the non-Edge version), as it's supported until April 2027.

The oldest legacy driver Nvidia officially supports is version 390. If your grandma doesn't plan on gaming, you might be able to avoid all this hassle by using the open-source Nouveau driver, which should be installed automatically if the system recognizes her Nvidia card.

Since it's for your grandma, why not just stick with the Nouveau driver? Or, even better, consider removing the dedicated GPU and using the integrated graphics instead for better compatibility.
